Restylane® and Perlane® are gels that are injected into the skin for the purpose of lifting up wrinkles and folds as well as adding volume to the lips. They are made up of hyaluronic acid, which is a naturally occurring substance present in everyone. Once injected, Restylane and Perlane correct wrinkles and folds by adding volume. While some older fillers are derived from animal sources, Restylane and Perlane are non-animal based products.

Frequently Asked Questions for Restylane and Perlane

How are Restylane and Perlane administered?
Restylane and Perlane are injected into the skin with a very fine needle. The gel then produces volume under the fine lines or wrinkles, lifting them up and smoothing them out. Restylane and Perlane can also be used to line or add volume to the lips.

How do Restylane and Perlane differ?
Both Restylane and Perlane are hyaluronic acid gels, but Perlane is a slightly thicker gel, making it ideal for deeper wrinkles and folds.  Also, because it’s a thicker gel, Perlane may last up to 9 months. Restylane and Perlane can be used together and layered in the same treatment area.  Dr. Cone or Lisa Butler, RN will help determine which product is best for your treatment goals.

What can be treated?
Specifically, Restylaneand Perlane can be used to smooth contours and folds in the face, as well as fill in fine lines and wrinkles. They are also commonly used to line and shape the lips. The most common areas treated are the frown lines between the eyes, the nasolabial folds (the folds from the base of the nose to the angle of the mouth), and the lips.

Is it painful?
Most people tolerate the injections very well. A topical anesthetic is applied to areas prior to treatment. In addition, when injecting into the lips, a local anesthetic injection like the one given at the dentist's office is administered before the Restylane and Perlane injections.

How soon will I see results?
You will see results immediately, although the long-term results are more apparent after post-treatment swelling resolves.

What can I expect after the treatment?
Immediately after the injections, you can expect some local swelling, redness, tenderness, and occasionally some itching. There is also a chance of some bruising. These symptoms are only temporary. The discomfort generally resolves in a few days. If the lip is injected, swelling may be uneven and persist for several days. Your long-term results will be apparent by 10-14 days after the injection. It is at this time that you will have a follow-up visit at our office to assess your results.

What must I do to ensure good results after my injections?
In the first two days, you should not rub, press on, or massage the injected areas. If you have had your lips injected, you should try not to pucker them during this time as well. In addition, you should not expose the treated areas to extreme temperatures during the first 48 hours, or until all swelling resolves.

Once injected, can Restylane or Perlane be removed?
Restylane and Perlane will dissolve slowly over time. In most cases, Restylane will last for about 6 months and Perlane will last about 9 months.

Are there any other considerations?
Yes. You should look at yourself closely and really think about the results that you are expecting. It is very important to convey this to your physician before the treatment so that you clearly understand what results Restylane and Perlane can and cannot provide.
