What causes spider veins?
The exact cause of spider veins isn’t known, but there are a number of suspected culprits. Sun damage, pregnancy, hormonal imbalances, weight gain, and occupations where the person has long periods of standing or sitting are all thought to play a part. Genetics also seem to have an effect.
While not physically dangerous in any way, these little squiggly red and blue lines are anything but pretty. They are most prominent around the nose, on the cheeks, and around the chin.
Putting lasers to work
At AesthetiSpa, we match the wavelength in our YAG laser to the hemoglobin in the unwanted vein in a process known as photocoagulation. The laser light energy is selectively absorbed by the hemoglobin, but the real target is the blood vessel wall, which absorbs the heat that occurs from thermal transfer out of the hemoglobin. When this heat hits the vessel wall, it causes the wall to collapse, closing off the vein. Over time, the body absorbs the unused vein and it fades away.
How long does it take to get rid of the veins?
At AesthetiSpa, we usually need 1-3 sessions for a vein to be fully closed off. These treatments are spaced from 4-6 weeks apart. Treatments last only 15 to 45 minutes. Our clearance rates are from 80 to 100%. Laser vein treatments aren’t limited to certain body areas and they are painless.
